What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is used to provide a relaxing, calming experience to patients who are receiving dental care. There are multiple types of sedation that can be used in dentistry. One of the most popular is oral conscious sedation, which is administered in the form of a pill. Oral sedation for dental treatment can be used in a variety of scenarios, such as for patients who:

  • Have dental phobias or anxieties
  • Dislike needles
  • Are undergoing lengthy procedures or multiple treatments in the same sitting
  • Have a strong gag reflex

How sedation dental care works

Oral conscious sedation is convenient and effective. You will be prescribed a pill that you take at a certain time before your appointment (typically an hour or so beforehand). After you take the pill, you will begin to feel relaxed and by the time your appointment starts, it will reach its peak effect. While you receive your care, you will be awake and able to answer questions or follow directions as needed, but you will feel calm and anxiety-free. Many patients are so relaxed that they don’t even remember the appointment afterwards! Because oral conscious sedation has a sedative effect, you will need to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.
